Eczema on the face
Eczema can be an irritating condition, if it affects the face then it can be a very embarrassing condition due to it being very visible. The face is one of the most embarrassing places for eczema to affect, it’s common for many sufferers to get depressed and have their confidence dented. Learning to deal with eczema on the skin is very difficult, but it is possible.
The symptoms of eczema on the face are very similar to when it affects any other part of the body, normally redness, dryness and itchiness of the face are all experienced. You may start to notice scabs forming, leading to the skin cracking and possibly oozing a fluid. Some people only suffer from eczema on the face, but many others also experience it on other parts of their body too.
The most common type of eczema that affects the face is called atopic eczema, this usually begins during your childhood, babies normally develop this between the ages of one to six months. Sometimes children only develop one spot, but other children experience eczema all over their bodies, this is a more generalized form of eczema.
The main symptoms of eczema on the face include redness, dryness, and a persistent itching sensation. Scratching the itch is defiantly not a good thing to do, it can cause your skin to become thicker and could cause the skin to bleed or weep. It can also cause your skin to become darker in the affected areas.
This thickening of the skin can lead to the normal blemishes and markings on the skin become much more noticeable, this is known as “Lichenification”. This normally occurs on the eyelids and can cause a serious problem to sufferers of eczema on the face.
Eczema on the face affects both adults and children in equal numbers. This is known as seborrhoeic eczema, it is the same type that causes cradle cap in infants, and dandruff. When the condition is found in an adult, it commonly affects the creases either side of the nose, the eye brows, and the scalp. The eyelids are also occasionally affected.
Eczema on the face can cause a problem by dry skin getting into the eyes, people that suffer from this condition must be very careful that they do not allow this to happen.
If you suffer from eczema of the scalp then your scalp will shed lots of dandruff, it may cause your scalp to look red and the flakes may appear yellow in color, this is thought to be connected with a yeast allergy that is normally found in the greasy areas of eczema sufferers. This type of eczema is very difficult to resolve as it can come back time and time again.
Babies tend to experience different symptoms when they suffer from seborrhoeic eczema than adults have. If an infant will suffer from this condition it will normally start before the baby reaches the age of three months. This is commonly referred to as cradle cap, because it shows up as yellow flakes on the scalp and behind the ears, this is rarely seen anywhere else, although it can be.
Normally cradle cap disappears before the baby’s first birthday, and does not itch, occasionally it does persist for a little longer however.
Eczema on the face can be a very upsetting condition, and can cause a lot of emotional trauma, you should seek help and support from your doctor and your family members. Make sure you take good care of your health, and don’t let it get you down too much.
